Historic motoring memorabilia safeguarded

A unique collection of motoring memorabilia worth more than £250,000, which is owned by the Guild of Motoring Writers (GoMW), has been safeguarded by Healys.

The London firm of solicitors, which specialises in giving legal advice to the owners of race teams and classic car owners, has set up a trust to safeguard more than a hundred individual items.

These range from Jackie Stewart’s original racing helmet to a connecting rod from Mike Hawthorn’s 1955 Le Mans winning Jaguar, including many original artworks hanging at The Pall Mall and Woodcote Park headquarters of the Royal Automobile Club.

“These items are a huge asset to the Guild,” said Guild President Nick Mason “and one which we want to look after for future generations.”

He added: “When Healys heard what we were trying to do they stepped in and suggested that a trust be set up. This means that the items which we have been given and that are on display at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu; the RAC Pall Mall club house in London and the Coventry Motor Museum will now be safe.”

Member of the Healys Classic Car Group Clive Robertson said: “Putting in place a trust to safeguard items like this is just what we do to protect car collections and other items of historic interest. We give professional advice to car collectors and institutions all the time and we were delighted to step in and help the Guild look after these items, which are an important part of their heritage.”

The new Guild of Motoring Writers permanent display at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu in Hampshire was recently unveiled and this is is where many of the items that are now secure thanks to the trust will be on display to the public

Cutting the ribbon were Lord Ralph Montague and Guild President Nick Mason, former Pink Floyd drummer and noted car collector and writer. The display presents some of The Guild’s unique collection of motoring memorabilia, donated to it over the years since its formation in 1944.
