Sir Mel Stride, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer, will take to the stage at this year’s Propertymark One Conference to outline his vision for reforming the UK housing market, including the proposed abolition of Stamp Duty on primary residences.
On 12 June 2026, at the Excel in London, Sir Mel will be addressing delegates from across the property sector on one of the most debated issues affecting market fluidity, affordability and long-term economic growth.
With extensive experience at the heart of government, including roles as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Chair of the Treasury Select Committee, Sir Mel brings a unique perspective on the intersection of fiscal policy and housing. His session will focus on the economic and social implications of Stamp Duty, which he has described as “one of the worst taxes” for restricting movement within the housing market.
Propertymark One Conference attendees will hear firsthand how proposals to abolish Stamp Duty could reshape the property landscape, from improving access for first-time buyers to enabling downsizers and increasing overall transaction levels. Sir Mel is expected to highlight how reducing barriers to moving home could stimulate wider economic activity, supporting businesses and communities nationwide.
Jason Lee, Commercial Manager at Propertymark, comments:
“Hosting Sir Mel Stride at the Propertymark One Conference provides attendees with a valuable opportunity to engage directly with a leading political figure on a policy area that has profound implications for the housing market. Stamp Duty continues to influence behaviour at every stage of the property lifecycle, and any proposal to reform or abolish it warrants serious consideration from industry professionals.
Our conference is about bringing together insight, expertise and forward-thinking debate. Sir Mel’s contribution will add a significant political and economic dimension to discussions around how we create a more fluid, accessible and efficient housing market.”
The Propertymark One Conference, in partnership with Rightmove, is the organisations flagship event, bringing together property professionals, industry leaders and policymakers to explore the key issues shaping the future of the sector.
