With the new government setting out its focus on building a “more preventative state”, workplace health is likely to become an increasingly important part of the conversation around employment, healthcare and economic inactivity.
As well as commenting on Andy Burnham’s plans, Ian Talbot, CEO of Healix Health, discusses why workplace health should be central to a preventative approach, how employers can support earlier intervention and better access to care, and the practical steps needed to reduce long-term sickness absence.
With research showing that 28% of employees took time off work last year because they were unable to access the care they needed, the discussion highlights the growing role employers and healthcare providers can play in helping people access support sooner and remain healthier for longer.
“As Andy Burnham takes office, his commitment in his first speech to help people ‘live well’ by building a ‘more preventative state’ is welcome, but that ambition must extend to the workplace. Sir Charlie Mayfield is right to describe tackling workplace ill health as one of the biggest opportunities we have to drive growth in this country. For many people, accessing the right support early enough can make the difference between staying healthy and needing time away from work. Our own research found that 28% of employees took time off work last year because they couldn’t access the care they needed, showing why workplace health must form part of the government’s preventative approach.
The Keep Britain Working Review gives the new government a practical place to start. We need to strengthen the infrastructure around workplace health, helping employers support prevention, early intervention and better healthcare navigation for their people. This is not about employers replacing the NHS, which will always play the central role. It is about employers, healthcare providers and the NHS working together so people can access the right support sooner, stay healthier for longer and prevent health concerns from becoming long-term absences.”
