In Focus: real experiences of how protection builds life resilience

As part of our ‘In Focus’ series on building financial resilience, Rebecca Hill, Head of Marketing at Cirencester Friendly, explores the real-world experiences of Paul and Elliot. Their stories illustrate how life and income protection can provide essential support during times of illness, injury or other financial shocks, helping households maintain stability and recover more quickly from unforeseen setbacks. By highlighting these practical outcomes, this piece shows how protection plays a vital role in helping clients navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence.

Life is a lottery. One minute, everything could be going your way, the next, something crops up that blocks your path. The problem may be small, simple to solve and something you can easily overcome to get back on track. However, it could create a much larger blockade that takes much longer to circumvent.

Many of these major problems come out of the blue without warning. Suffering an accident or being diagnosed with an illness can happen in seconds and happen to anyone. Even the most risk-averse person in the world cannot completely guarantee their health and safety. Therefore, it makes total sense to take steps to mitigate the impact of these issues.

We’re all very used to hearing messages to encourage us to do more exercise and eat more healthily. These are good things to do. It is proven that inactivity and obesity are harmful and increase your chances of becoming ill and can shorten your life expectancy.

However, the fittest, healthiest person can still have an accident or contract a serious illness. Just looking after that aspect of your life will still leave you vulnerable to many bumps in the road.

To build true life resilience, with the support to help you weather the toughest storms and get back on track more quickly, you need something to protect your financial as well as your physical health.

Our member stories illustrate just how much financial protection has supported their health and helped them to get over the barriers that have been in their way.

Paul was out enjoying a walk with his daughter, something he had done hundreds of times before. This time, however, he took a misstep and ended up injuring his knee. This accident was serious enough to keep him off work for months. While having the money to pay for essentials was very welcome, what really helped Paul was the physiotherapy he received.

With the NHS still under enormous pressure, accessing services for non-acute conditions can take weeks, if not months. This meant his knee could be treated quickly, so the problem did not worsen while he waited for help, and he could make a faster return to work.

According to the charity Mind, mental health in the UK has been steadily declining over the last decade, with more people seeking help from the NHS than ever before. By January 2026, more than 2 million adults and children were in contact with mental health services, and waiting times for help can commonly be more than six months. This places a massive barrier to living the lives they want for many.

Elliot is one of these people and has struggled with his mental health recently. It has prevented him from working and doing the things he wants to. What really helped him to overcome this difficult hurdle was access to mental health support and a psychiatrist through his income protection policy. This support has completely transformed his outlook and he is now retraining to help others in the wellbeing sector.

Both Paul and Elliot have found that by protecting their finances, they have done far more than ensure they can pay for everyday essentials. The common ailments they’ve suffered, which could affect anybody, may have had a detrimental effect on their lives for decades.

The range of support services offered through protection, which can be difficult, if not impossible, to access elsewhere, has made an enormous difference. They have allowed them to withstand the problems life has thrown at them, giving them the ability to bounce back. Protection is not just the foundation for financial resilience; it provides the footing to deal more effectively with life’s bumps in the road.
