MSCI releases 2022 ‘Women on Boards’ report assessing largest firms’ gender diversity

MSCI, a leading provider of decision support tools and services for the global investment community, has recently published its’ latest Women on Boards Progress Report.

Their detailed report assesses the gender diversity amongst senior leadership of 2,800+ of the world’s largest companies over the past year (the MSCI ACWI Index).

This isn’t a new thing however, MSCI ESG Research has been tracking board gender diversity since 2009.

This Wednesday, March 8th, we’ll be celebrating International Women’s Day here on IFA Magazine. This research from MSCI is a timely reminder that the gender gap is still alive and kicking when it comes to big business, right across the globe – even if there is some positive news!

So what’s changed? The notable highlights from the latest MSCI 2022 edition include:

· A 1.9% year-on-year increase of women on boards globally, up to 24.5% in 2022 from 22.6% in 2021

· The percentage of female CEOs increased to 5.8% in 2022 from 5.3% in 2021

· In the UK, 88.4% of companies have at least 30% of women on boards, which is an increase of 1.8%, from 86.2% in 2021

· MSCI projects that corporate boards globally will reach the 30% and 50% targets for female representation by 2026 and 2038 respectively

· The EU’s new target of 40% of non-executive director posts going to women by 2026 has been met by nearly half of EU-based constituents of MSCI index of largest global companies

o However, 1.8% of EU-domiciled companies lack any female directors

· All-male boards can be found at 11.2% of companies in the MSCI ACWI Index, down from 14.2% in 2021.

The report provides a breakdown by sector, job role (e.g CFOs vs CEOs), geographies and year-on-year changes. It also outlines the individual companies with the highest and lowest percentage of women on boards.
