Majority of Small Business Owners Want a Change in Government

I
  • 58% of businesses think a change of government would result in a positive change
  • 54% of company owners told Startups.co.uk that business incentives could affect how they would vote this year
  • 1 of 5 businesses think a reduction in corporation tax would be the primary policy likely to make a positive impact

This week Rishi Sunak has announced there will be a general election on the 4th of July 2024. The long awaited announcement could result in a change of government in the second half of this year.

Startups.co.uk conducted a survey of 546 UK small businesses, it was found that 58% of business owners believed that a change in government in 2024 would have a positive impact on their prospects. Only 9% felt it would have a negative impact.

The survey also found that more businesses felt they had survived (51%) rather than thrived (42%) over the past year, making it no surprise many would welcome change.

Over half of business owners surveyed stated that business incentives will influence how they vote. 21% of business owners thought a reduction in corporation tax will likely have a positive impact.

Richard Parris, Managing Editor of Startups.co.uk comments:

“Inflation may be coming down, and Rishi Sunak is touting this as a success of his party’s strategy. But, small business leaders have told us they’re keen for change at the top to truly improve their prospects. They will need to see ambition and commitments from the election manifestos of each party. The business vote is there to be captured, if the right policies are heard.”
