Why businesses must empower women to reach the top of the tech ladder

Written by Sai Bendi, Software Development Manager at Encompass Corporation

Throughout the technology sector, women today continue to face hurdles when it comes to career progression. Although diversity, equality and inclusion are under the spotlight, and progress has been made in areas, it’s imperative for businesses to address these challenges directly if we are to see females rising to truly reach their full potential.

Because of its fast, challenging and technical nature, the technology industry often captivates innovators who are driven by a deep fascination about digital transformation. So, to harness the unique skills and qualities that women bring, organisations must prioritise creating environments where all employees can excel, regardless of gender.

Beyond the excitement of pioneering game-changing advancements, in the case of women, they are also more likely be drawn to organisations that encourage and allow them to achieve their professional goals while supporting their personal circumstances with flexibility and understanding.

Promoting flexible working policies

According to a recent survey from Women in Tech, the number one factor to consider when it comes to successfully retaining females in the industry is flexible working.

There is no doubt that as employees, male or female, juggle their career demands with home life and caring responsibilities, for example, implementing flexible working policies will set businesses apart in the market. These can range from work-from-anywhere policies, to enhanced maternity and childcare support.

Women must be supported professionally and personally to be motivated to further their careers. Now, more than ever, as work and family life increasingly intertwine, it is crucial that employers show commitment to enabling their staff to thrive in both realms.

Fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment

With diversity, equality and inclusion front and centre across the board, this must be actively considered, with tangible effort being shown through various initiatives, such as conducting regular EDI forums and focusing on training and recruitment efforts that specifically target underrepresented groups. It is only by showing a level of commitment, openness and dedication here that prospective employees will be attracted to a company, and existing staff will feel that it is the right place for them to realise their ambitions. Employees want to see their organisations driving meaningful change and are likely to feel proud to represent a company and culture that values diversity and invests in every person not only feeling included but being supported to develop themselves.

Investing in qualifications and skills development

Businesses must continuously invest in learning and development for all employees, at all levels, to ensure they feel challenged and inspired professionally while balancing a busy personal life. Providing training programmes, workshops, and mentorship opportunities to help women, specifically, grow their technical skills and stay competitive in what is an evolving and largely male-dominated industry will help them feel more confident to take the next step in their careers and, ultimately, have the belief that they can push up the ladder if they so wish.

Government findings have shown that female progression professionally is often held back by bias surrounding pay and promotions. Now is the time for organisations to strongly challenge this, take accountability for their role in changing any bias or preconception, and put effort into ensuring an open, progressive arena for all to thrive in – regardless of gender or background.

Collaboration from industry and policymakers is crucial to building a future landscape that is welcoming, inclusive, and breaks down the barriers when it comes to diversity. It is only then that we will see the real transformative potential that many females hold, and they will feel empowered to progress to the highest levels. In 2024, women should be bold and sure about what they want and deserve. They must advocate and be part of the change. Everyone’s voice is equal, and being resilient in the face of challenges is a strength that will inspire others to charge forward and be the leaders of tomorrow.
