PM Boris Johnson agrees to stand down amidst political chaos in government

After much speculation, it has just been announced on the BBC that Boris Johnson has finally decided that he is going to stand down as Prime Minister.  In a speech from outside 10 Downing Street at 12.30 today, Johnson gave his resignation as Conservative Party Leader – and thereby as Prime Minister.

The BBC reported early this morning, that Boris Johnson will continue as PM until the Autumn as the Conservative Party carry out a leadership race to appoint his successor. There has been much debate about the merits of this however and it is likely that the debate will continue.

There has been much speculation across the media all morning that today was going to be a significant day in UK history. This has now been borne out as the people on Boris Johnson’s own side have turned against him which has led to his reported decision to step down. The UK faces the end of the Johnson era and significant news developments can be expected as the day goes on. A new cabinet has been appointed and a meeting of the cabinet will now take place this afternoon.
