Weekend press review

The Sunday Times reports that Terry Smith’s Fundsmith Equity fund has been dropped from broker Charles Stanley’s best-buy list, after concerns that the £19bn fund may have become too big to manage.

They also observe that in the wake of the rally in the gold markets, silver could also be about to step up after analysing data known as the gold/silver ratio.

Banks, apparently, are ‘stealing ISA tax breaks’ to boost fixed-rate bond returns; but don’t be left thinking that today’s paper is a Boris-free issue – casting an eye across the Atlantic, it notes that since Donald Trump was elected, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has soared by 50%. Hence the headline, “The markets have more fun when a ‘blond buffoon’ runs the country”.

The Sunday Telegraph observes wryly that investing in G4S, one of the world’s largest cash handlers, has for the last 2 years been a spectacular way of losing money.

They also suggest that now is the ideal time to invest in British ‘micro-cap’ stocks, listed businesses which are even smaller than the traditional ‘smaller company’. Nick Greenwood, who runs the Miton Global Opportunities portfolio, says these stocks are entering a perfect storm; it’s while they’re taking a battering that opportunities will arise.

The paper also explores the phenomenon of ‘Brexit blindness’, and asks why investors are deserting Europe when its stocks are booming.

And The Mail on Sunday?

“Stop that charge Neil! It’s two months since Neil Woodford shut his flagship investment fund – and fury is growing that he is still taking YOUR money in fees”. They said much the same last week, but you might have missed it…

The paper also reports calls for a probe as a US predator targets the £4bn defence firm Cobham, while other companies consider pursuing rival offers.

We learn that the London Stock Exchange is in discussions over a £42bn union to create a global trading and financial information powerhouse, while Simon Lambert analyses what BJ as PM means for individual personal finances.
