The Income Protection Task Force (IPTF) has launched Story 3: Misrepresentation Matters, the latest chapter in its acclaimed 7 Claims Stories series, led by Protection industry expert Phil Deacon.
This timely and powerful feature tackles misrepresentation, a leading cause of declined income protection claims – head-on. With an estimated 52% of declined claims in 2024 linked to some form of misrepresentation, this is no longer a side issue. It’s a challenge at the heart of long-term sustainability in the Protection industry.
In this edition, Cara Spinks, Head of Life & Health at actuarial consultancy Broadstone, outlines the true cost of misrepresentation – not just for customers, but for advisers, insurers, and the industry’s overall credibility.
The story includes practical adviser tips, real-life case studies, and insurer insights and explores the regulatory lens through FCA’s Consumer Duty, offering clear, actionable guidance for everyone in the sector.
“If we’re serious about helping more customers get the support they need, we have to take misrepresentation seriously – and that means changing how we all engage in the protection process,” says Deacon.
Story 3 is essential reading for advisers, insurers, underwriters, claims professionals, and anyone committed to improving outcomes across the Protection landscape.
The full story will be rolled out on IPTF’s website and social platforms throughout the week. Starting with an engaging “How much do you know about misrep?” quiz and wrapping up with a thought-provoking take on how AI could help tackle misrepresentation in the future.
Story 1 in the 7 Claims series, Guiding a Client through a Storm, focused on the role of an adviser in the claims process via video case story and Story 2, Vocational Rehabilitation: Getting Back on Track, explored the important role of vocational rehabilitation support via a real life case study and dedicated podcast episode.
